The Doors

The Lockless Door by Robert Frost
It went many years,
But at last came a knock,
And I though of the door
With no lock to lock.

I blew out the light,
I tip-toed the floor,
And raised both hands
In prayer to the door.

But the knock came again.
My window was wide;
I climbed on the sill
And descended outside.

Back over the sill
I bade a 'Come in'
To whatever the knock
At the door may have been.

So at a knock
I emptied my cage
To hide in the world
And alter with age.
Today we discuss par deux to our door decorum series { part one here } As you well know and as we have already discussed the door is the entrance into your home and therefore sets the stage for the aesthetics, atmosphere, and ambiance of the entirety of your intimate abode. The door and entryway create the first impression of your home, and to people who may be new acquaintances, it may even be their first impression of your personality, style, and character. There are abundant ways to add panache to your porch many of which are veeeerrry inexpensive and easy to do. So now you have no excuses, right? Last post we talked about hardware. There a plenty of fabulous door knockers out there ranging from traditional to whimsical and quirky all of which add immediate visual interest, personality, and intrigue. Today's post, however, encompasses the entire visual appeal of the door, something that will catch your eye from the curb...COLOR. Paint color is, without a doubt, the cheapest, easiest, and most impactful way to change the look and feel of ANY element. And put it on a door? You will be the belle of the block party.
There are infinite ways to accomplish this, as you will see below. You can highlight architectural features and molding by painting them in contrasting colors, you can create a visual path by painting it the same color as your iron railing that skims your walkway, you can go crazy and paint patterns and pictures on your door, you can add inexpensive pieces of wood or molding to create depth and dimensional shapes to a plain door, you can add rivets and studs or nails to create intriguing patterns and frames, you can incorporate custom/vintage ironwork, or you can simply paint it an audaciously bold and unexpected color. The great thing about this is that it is entirely custom and can be completely tailored to your taste and comfort level. Some of the doors below are beautiful, but a bit extreme in some neighborhoods and circumstances, others are more subdued but with the same visual impact. You decide which is best for you. Either way, this is sure to draw attention and invitation to your home and evoke curiosity as to how fabulous the interior must look.
 {Disclaimer: if you are going to command attention with your entryway please ensure that your lawn is mowed and perhaps your flowerbeds aren't dying. This will certainly distract from the wow factor of your endeavors.}
 Take a look and see and wonder...and note that none of these doors match the house, are brown or muted, are standard home construction pieces.....and see how much impact they have? and how great they look? I know it's scary to venture out of the box and make a bold move like this but hopefully these doors will assure you that it is well worth the initial fear of living on the edge:
