Outfit To Room: Black and Cognac

In continuations of yesterday's quote, "it doesn't have to match it has to go" we will dispel one of the most pervasive style "rules" of all time: NEVER combine black and brown together; an outfit/room must utilize one or the other never both. What?! Whoever decided upon this rule was completely oblivious to the insanely chic and sophisticated paring that these appealing color and textural combinations can be. Black, brown, navy, grey, camel, cream...they are ALL NEUTRALS...meaning you can pair them with anything INCLUDING each other. Frankly, I think they bring out the best in each other when they are married together and if you can master the effortless chic that is combining the two you are immediately launched into a strata of style that far exceeds the musings of the ordinary. The key to successfully combining the two without appearing like a neutral patchwork is to decide upon one as the primary, say black, and accent with the secondary, cognac. For example (as seen below) black walls/floors and scant cognac furniture/architectural accents. Or, select another color/neutral as the primary/background color (say white, cream, and blush as seen in our picture examples) and once again accent with a primary, cognac (all of the major furnishings and accents are cognac or in the cognac color family or, in the same color family as the cream/blush background color creating an overall color scheme), and a secondary, black, which serves as a small accent to the overall blended color scheme (in this case there are only two ridiculously gorgeous black accent chairs to add that needed "pop" and contrast in neutral tones and a trace amount of black evident in other accents throughout such as book spines and faded zebra stripes in the rug in order to spread and balance the dramatic intrusion of the high contrast black). It can be a tricky combination and oftentimes an uncomfortable one to make if you are used to firmly abiding by your grandma's style rules. I know the transition was initially a little weird for me to make as I used to swear by the black and brown don't mix rule, myself, but boy when I let that go...it completely altered my stylistic eye (for the better!) and my wardrobe and designs haven't been the same since.
